Drama Desk Awards to be Announced Tonite!

Tonight is the night! The Drama Desk Awards are soon going to be announced! The festivities take place at Town Hall and are hosted again this year by two-time Drama Desk Award Winner the irresistible Michael Urie. The suspense is killing me!

I am very proud to say that I am a Voting Member of this most prestigious, theatrical award giving body, made up entirely of members of the press. And is also the only award that honors Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway equally. For instance, the Tonys only nominate and award Broadway shows. The Lucille Lortel Awards honor Off Broadway. The Obies are for Off and Off. But the Drama Desk Nominating Committee has the daunting job of seeing EVERYthing, and considering EVERYthing performed on a New York stage that season.

They don’t consider shows that are very much in the Tony conversation such as “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” or “Dear Evan Hansen” because they were originally performed Off Broadway and were considered for awards in the seasons they first were seen.

So a show like “Come From Away” which is also nominated for many Tony Awards may do very well tonight.

You can follow all the proceedings on http://www.theatermania.com on a live feed. Let the excitement begin!
