Oscar Thoughts Pre-TIFF ~”August:Osage County” Out in Front

For those of you who MUST know what’s going on Oscarwise Pre-TIFF, it’s pretty clear to me. TIFF is absolutely essential to next year’s Oscar Winner. It is THEEE premiere Oscar launch pad, no question.

Last year, I remember being told there were TWO films I absolutely could not get into if I missed their Press & Industry or P&I screenings, which I
did. Those are the screenings, I, as an accredited journalist, are SUPPOSED to legitmately attend, and didn’t. I missed them both. They were “Argo” and “The Master” and of course, “Argo” won the Oscar.

That’s a pretty good indicator to me. And in recent years past, “The Artist” started there. And the year before that “The King’s Speech” which ended up winning the Audience Award there. That’s a pretty damn good average…and it continues to hold, I’m thinking.

All the major Oscar contenders are heading there “August:Osage County” main among them. And yes, it’s the Weinstein Co.AGAIN. It’s being shown there and only there before Thanksgiving screenings begin around its’ release date.

This is the classic pattern that both Weinstein winners TKS and TA followed exactly. To a “T” Why fix something that isn’t broken, thinks Harvey Weinstein, I’m so sure.

Sasha Stone posits at the always excellent www.awardsdaily.com that Telluride figures into this, too, but never having been there, I can’t say as surely as she can, who goes there every year now.

But she’s right in that even “The King’s Speech” started there. Not Toronto. It only preceeded it by a few days, but still. 

I’ll never forget future Oscar winning director Tom Hooper telling me the excitement he, Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush all felt sitting together in the dark at Telluride and they’re sensing the audience’s excitement. By Toronto, it was totally clear to me that it had already won the race. And it did.

New York has had the dubious distinction of recent years in invariably opening the film that comes in SECOND.
“The Life of Pi”, “The Social Network”, “Lincoln”, “Hugo” and with Tom Hanks’ new vehcile “Capt. Phillips,” it looks like that my happen again. In fact, I think you can count on it.

The Industry Poo-Bahs have all decided that Toronto and TIFF are IT as far as Oscar is concerned and I bet every Oscar strategist out there will agree. Of course, Toronto is very risky. It can also sink a  film’s chances, too. It’s a risk you run, and it’s a brutal, competitive, bloody race, this Oscar dash to the finish line.

Which this year isn’t until MARCH btw. So it’s a long race this year too.

Having seen “August:Osage County” on the Broadway stage THREE times, I would place my bet on this pony, as Tom O’Neil, my idol, at www.goldderby.com would say.

I can tell you with surety though, that Harvey Weinstein will schedule an 8:45am press & industry screening at Toronto and that I will line up an hour early to get in. For “The King’s Speech” I remember getting up at 5:30AM to get to the inconveniently located theater on time. AND I was FIRST ON LINE! And the first one in  It was thrilling. And I’m betting I do it all over again for “August:Osage County.”

I Solve the Mystery! Why Ben Affleck Was Snubbed for Best Director Oscar!

I think I’ve finally cracked the case, Sherlock. The imponderable Oscar riddle of why Ben Affleck, Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainer of the Year, was unbelievably snubbed for a Best Director Oscar nomination this year for “Argo.”

Let me also note, that this snub by the AMPAS director’s branch has turned the entire 2012 Oscar race upside down. Since it happened, the affable Affleck and his terrific, suspenseful crowd-pleaser “Argo” is winning every award in sight. And will continue to do so, too, it seems.

Tonight is the DGA, and Affleck will probably win Best Director there, too.

Why then o why did the Director’s branch of merely 370 voters leave him off their list? They left off Kathryn Bigelow, too, but the controversy surrounding her sharp espionage thriller sunk her ship. And Tom Hooper of “Les Miz”? Well, some people just don’t like musicals. And Hooper’s wide-angle, fish-eye-lens, mostly-in-close-up-style-of-shooting of this all sung-through and recorded-live musical, was just too much of a departure for the stodgy director’s branch to take. Too much innovation, methinks.

But “Argo”? And Affleck? A straight forward thriller diller from start to go? Why did the Director’s Branch not go for “Argo”?

Well, I think the answer lies in plain sight. In the movie itself. It’s in John Goodman’s hilarious line “You can teach a Rhesus monkey to direct a Hollywood movie in a day.” THAT’S IT. RIGHT THERE. The Directors Branch Voters, or enough of them to make Affleck just miss(probably) were INSULTED! And I mean insulted!

“He’s making monkeys out of us! Well, we’ll make a monkey out of him!” I think they thought, judging by their actions.

The Director’s Branch has always been very idiosyncratic, to put it mildly, and what else could it have been that made them react this way?

Well, we know one thing for sure. AMPAS has never been known to have much of a sense of humor. They continually favor drama over comedy. (So watch out Jennifer Hudson. I mean, Lawrence. Emmanuelle Riva is creeping up on you.)

And I bet, I just bet dollars to donuts, as Mrs. Patmore, the cook on “Downtown Abbey” would say, that that line about Hollywood directors being as smart as, or less smart than Rhesus monkeys, sunk Ben’s ship for an Oscar nomination. In this VERY competitive year. A few votes could’ve done it. One vote even.

Obviously, the shoe fit.

But by not nominating Ben Affleck, they’ve basically handed him every other award of the season, and probably tonights’ DGA, too.

Mystery solved. He insulted them.Ladies and gentle-persons of the jury, I rest my case.

This has been one of the best year’s for movies in many, many years, soooo many grrreat films! If you’ve been following this blog, you probably know what I’ve picked before I announce it!

Hugh Jackman Turns Into This Year’s Jean Dujardin! Hugh FTW!

I never thought I’d be writing this sentence, they are SUCH different men and performers, but last night by winning Best Actor Musical I saw Hugh Jackman turn into Jean Dujardin! Or this year’s Jean Dujardin to be more exact.

“Lincoln” lost BIG TIME last night. There’s no denying it with only one win for Daniel Day Lewis, who everybody seemed tired of already. Does he REALLY need a THIRD Oscar? I felt resistance all around that room last night. The applause was lukewarm, at best.

And who was it who cracked “He just grew a beard?” Was that Robert Downey Jr.? Was he expressing sentiments of a larger voting body that he belongs to, i.e., the Academy. SOME presenter onstage said that thought verbally, OUT LOUD, last night.

And then, and THEN “Les Miserables” won Best Film Comedy or Musical! Just like “The Artist” did last year!

The animosity towards Steven Spielberg was as palpable as if everyone in the room suddenly turned in to Jeffrey Wells of http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com

And so this puts “Les Mis” FIRMLY back into the race. The “Lincoln” negativity is coming from the C-Span-ish-ness of that lumbering, sleep-inducing dirge. It’s History Channel all the way.

And now that I’ve got my TV back to working order, I would rather turn on the History Channel ANY DAY than sit through “Lincoln” again in my life-time.

To get it in the neck from the Broadcast Film Critics on Thursday, then again on Sunday for the HFPA, well…two strikes and you’re out.

The only important awards now left before the Oscars are the SAGs, which is where last year George Clooney lost out to Jean Dujardin and “The Artist”s Oscar win was sealed.

Watch for “Lincoln” not to win anything at the SAGs and we’re being set up for, as incredible as it may seem, another “Colored Purple” year. That was when, and I know I mentioned this SOMEwhere in my Live-Blogging posts last night, that was the year when the Steven Spielberg directed “Colored Purple” with 11 nominations going in to the ceremony, LOST ALL ELEVEN!

And it’s starting to happen again…Hugh Jackman really aced it last night by winning that Best Actor award AGAINST the Weinstein machine behind Bradley Cooper.

“Silver Linings Playbook” didn’t win much. Just Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress Musical-Comedy. She COULD win the Oscar, or it could be —wait for it —Qu’venzhane Wallis! For “Beasts of the Southern Wild!”

This is a really unpredictable year. Full of surprises. I guess I can safely predict THAT.

“Argo” Wins Best Picture Drama! I like this! “Les Miz” the big winner with 3 Globes!

“Argo”!Yes, it’s “Argo” and yes, it’s over! FINALLY! But it got very exciting towards the end of this INTERMINABLE awards show. Blogging makes it go slower, but it’s done. And I’m glad I was able to share it with you, dear readers, dear cineastes! Please let me know if it was good for you, too.

The Golden Globes chose “Argo” as the Best Picture Drama over “Lincoln,” the expected winner and frontrunner with 7 Golden Globe nominations and 11 Academy Award noms. I was shocked! SHOCKED! But delighted! As “Lincoln” is a big sleeping pill, IMHO.

“Argo” got two awards as far as I’m counting. But “Les Miserables” got THREE!!! The Most Golden Globes tonight!!! OMG!!!!

“Les Miserables” won Best Film Comedy or Musical, Best Actor in a Comedy-Musical Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress.

“Silver Linings Playbook” got Best Actress in a Comedy-Musical for Jennifer Lawrence.
J- Law, as she’s called on the Intenet, gave a very nice, funny speech was clearly and warmly welcomed to her first Golden Globe trip to the podium. As were Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. I think that wave of affection is going to carry all three of them through to the Oscars.

There was a distinct feeling of reserve when Daniel Day Lewis won and the fact that “Lincoln” LOST SIX Golden Globes means something, awards-wise.

And that reserve was felt, too, with Jessica Chastain who was lovely, dignified, inntelligent, and regal.And VERY serious. But a little cool…compared to J-Law.

“Django” unchained two Golden Globes, one for Best Supporting Actor, for Christophe Waltz, and one for Best Screenplay for Quentin Tarantino.

So “Django” got more Globes than “Lincoln”. This was a very bad night for “Lincoln,” but a very good one, an INCREDIBLE one for “Les Miserables” who came out as the big winner with THREE Golden Globes! Incroyable!

Now if something like this happens at the SAGS…I expect Hugh Jackman to win in an upset for Best Actor against Daniel Day Lewis at the SAGS and Jennifer Lawrence to win over Jessica Chastain. There. I said it.

And Anne Hathaway will repeat her win, too,in Best Supporting Actress. But who will win Best Supporting Actor is now the big question?

Phillip Seymour Hoffman won the Broadcast Film Critics Award THURSDAY. He must’ve had some tip that he wasn’t going to win tonight, because he didn’t even turn up! And Tommy Lee Jones, who I thought would win, didn’t. He looked soooo angry.

But what a WONDERFUL night for “Les Miserables”! I’ve seen it four times! I think I’ll go again! And soon!

“LES MISERABLES” WINS GOLDEN GLOBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<O

OMGGGGGG! “Les Miserables” won Best Film Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes! And this was thought impossible because it OMITTED to nominated Tom Hooper for Best Director! This is incredible! Oh! This makes me so happy! I want to sing and dance! I nearly burst into tears again as they played “One Day More”!!!!

This means the endgame at the Oscars is between “Les Miserables”, “Argo” and “Lincoln.” Lincoln still hasn’t won ANYthing yet!
