Oscar Nomination Predictions- Best Supp.Actor & Actress

Here at last is what I think is going to go down on Tuesday morn at 8am EST when the Oscar Nominations are announced and the whole game changes…or does it? Or is it going to be what everybody has been been saying all season long? Ho-hum.

I used to do this on my TV show, but this year now that I have this wonderful blog, IT’S HERE!

Best Supporting Actor ~

Christian Bale – “The Fighter”

Michael Douglas- “Wall St. 2 Money Never Sleeps”

Jeremy Renner-“The Town”

Mark Ruffalo- “The Kid’s Are All Right”

Geoffrey Rush-“The King’s Speech”

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams -“The Fighter”

Helen Bonham-Carter -“The King’s Speech”

Melissa Leo-“The Fighter”

Barbara Hersey-“Black Swan”

Haillee Steinfeld – ‘True Grit”

My reasonings are thus. The Academy whose estimated age is unimaginable, tends to honor veteran performers in the Supporting Categories, when it can. Thus I see Barbara Hersey, who has been nominated only once before in her long carrer, also in Supporting. Hersey gives the most complex, layered, multi-faceted performance as Natalie Portman’s scary/caring/over-powering/over-protective mother. Try to image “Black Swan” without her. You can’t.

Mila Kunis from that film is just young and hot and she plays a lesbian. That seems to have turned many on the precursor awards circuit on, but not me, and not the Academy.

“Another Year”s magnificent Leslie Manville is going to fall victim to category confusion, I’m afraid which leads to vote-splitting, which leads to NOTHING. And she unknown here.

And the late releasing film hasn’t really caught on. Whereas the other possible vote-splitter, Haillee Steinfeld, is in another late released film, “True Grit” that HAS caught on, BIG TIME. And the interest in her(why?????) is so great, that there’s so many that seem to want her IN, that she could turn up in the category she SHOULD be in and was campaigned for in Best Supporting Actress.

Whereas Leslie Manville was campaigned in LEAD, in a tough, competitive year, too, when many thought she should’ve been campaigned in Supporting, she’s just not going to turn up ANYwhere.

And the Brit vote will go to Helena Bonham-Carter in “The King’s Speech.”

Michael Douglas also knocks out another Brit  Andrew Garfield, from that Film About Typing….Garfield is soooo young, and the Academy is soooo old and Michael Douglas is a Hollywood legend and he was very, very good in “WS2”. And most importantly, he nearly died this year, from throat cancer. He’s beat it, he says. But who knows? It’s a disease that could be in remission right now and may come back more strongly at any moment.Like during the voting period. And the Academy doesn’t want to risk him dying on them, without even a nomination for very fine work.

The Academy is a bunch of old softies and the LOVE the veteran guys, and regularly reward them over youth, especially in this category.

Also in Douglas’ and Jeremy Renner’s as well as the three from “The Fighter”, and Steinfeld from “True Grit”‘s favor is that they are backed by major studios. Warner Brothers and Paramount.

Then there’s the Harvey Factor. NOBODY runs an Oscar campaign like H. Weinstein and he’s got Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter, both superb in the superb “The King’s Speech.” They might as well nominate Harvey himself.  He’s a stealth factor behind alllll the Weinstein Company’s nominees. Though HW is hardly the definition of stealth.

AND LOOK out! IF on Tuesday morning GUY PEARCE ALSO turns up in Supporting for his vile abdicating King Edward VIII in “The King’s Speech” that’s going to show that “The King’s Speech” has much more support from within the Academy than many have thought.

He would, I’m guessing, replace Renner. And this would be, I think, Pearce’s first Oscar nomination. Whoa!

Parsing the BAFTA’s Long List’s Supporting Asterisks

Ok, we continue. With the BAFTA’s Long List and their Supporting Actor and Actress asterisks. OK. Once again I have to thank www.awardsdaily.com and Sasha Stone for putting up the whole she-bang so that we can react to it. In astonishment or wonder or delight or all of the above.

The BAFTAs once again, I know I’m repeating myself, but yes, this IS an odd system. I lived in England for many, many years and went to school there, too. So yes, EVERYthing is a bit odd. A bit eccentric. But the British LIKE eccentrics. In fact, they are cultivated there and even celebrated.

I was told when I lived there that I was a British eccentric, too. And I thought that they were perhaps overstating the case, but now, I think they were completely right.

But I digress…

So the BAFTAs publish this LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNG list first (see www.awardsdaily.com Everyone MUST see Awardsdaily. It’s a must-read, especially that now that we are in the heat of Awards season.) And for the first time this year, since I am now writing this blog on almost a daily basis.

I now have the platform to write about these little details, these minutae of the Awards Seasons. I guess this is something I’ve always wanted to do, but never did. But now I am. It’s like a damn bursting.

And I never noticed it before, but the BAFTAs put an asterisk on the names of five actors and actresses in their LONNNNNNG lists in each category, of who gets the most votes.

I don’t know why THEY JUST DON’T PUBLISH the darn nominations, goshdarnit! And let up the suspense. But then, that’s probably precisely WHY they do it this way. To build up suspense. Interest. It’s Hitchcockian. But then of course, Alfred Hitchcock was British.

So in Supporting Actor we have ~ WITH asterisks ~

ANDREW GARFIELD – For that movie I will not name. He also got a Golden Globe nod, but NOT a SAG, which is probably more significant, in that he IS British, and so you’d expect him to turn up here. And the Hollywood FOREIGN press would go for him, too. However, the ACTORS did not which is significant. Garfield was also long listed for “Never Let Go” but not asterisked. And that film, as well done as it was, bombed on both sides of the Atlantic. But Andrew is this year’s Hot Young Brit, so yes, he’ll be nominated here, but I don’t think he’s going to be nominated for an Oscar. And I don’t think he’ll win the Globe either.

BOB HOSKINS– “Made in Dagenham” A beautiful, sensitive performance as the union guy who’s SYMPATHETIC to the women strikers. And no,  not  a chance. No Globe nom seals it.

CHRISTIAN BALE-“The Fighter” Yes, of course, he’s in. And he’s also British. Yes, he is.

GEOFFREY RUSH– “The King’s Speech” Yes, of course he’s in. Superb career performance

MARK RUFFALO-“The Kid’s Are All Right”- Well, yes, of course. A SAG and a Golden Globe nom, too, make him ALMOST a slam-dunk. But if the BRITISH are voting for him, yes, I guess he’s in. Though will the SWORM(Straight White Old Rich Men) like his kinda negative male character back in Hollyweird. We’ll see.

Also listed but not asterisked Jeremy Renner for “The Town” the SAGs switched him out for Andrew Garfield. Last year the SAGs were 19 for 20 matching the Oscar Nominations. Except for Maggie Gyllenhaal and I HAD HER!!!!!

Vincent Cassel is long listed to in this category for “Black Swan.”AND NO MICHAEL DOUGLAS!

 Justin Timberlake was long-listed but no Armie Hammer! Is Armie the total dark horse now? Guess so. His Winklevoss Twins is STILL the Best Performance in that goddamn whatzit.I really thought they were two different actors playing both twins!! I DID!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

This is the one category that even stumped the New York Times’ Oscar section. So much so, they didn’t even write about it in their OSCAR section of the Arts & Leisure section this past Sunday! This is reminding me of the year that Tilda Swinton won, in that it is a race that is all over the place. Tilda was the only actress to keep appearing on everyone’s lists, although she was never on the top. But she was on every list.

Do the BAFTAs asterisks clear things up? Well, yes, and no.

AMY ADAMS– gets an asterisk and for the first time we see her in this category this year WITHOUT Melissa Leo’s companion performance in “The Fighter” glued to her side. She’ll get an Oscar nomination for sure now. Though it looks like Leo MIGHT not get a BAFTA nod, when they FINALLY announce it. But it looks like Amy will. Good for her.

BARBARA HERSHEY-“Black Swan” !!!! Turning up for the first time on a serious list, she’s the performance that the Academy is more likely to honor than the SAG and Golden Globe nominated Mila Kunis. Hershey had a rangey, multi-faceted performance. Is SHE driving her daughter insane or is it vice versa? It’s the real central conflict and Hersey’s dynamic, frightening MOM-FROM-HELL makes it work. Think “What would the “Black Swan” be without her performance?” So she’s on her way to a BAFTA nod it seems. She’s got an asterisk.

HELENA BONHAM-CARTER – “The King’s Speech” Natch. The one to beat. Everybody LOVED the Queen Mum. EVERYBODY. And that love will lead Helena to the Bafta podium. She’s certainly going to be Oscar nominated and I hope will win.

LESLEY MANVILLE “Another Year” BRILLIANT performance, much lauded, FINALLY turns up somewhere. Neither the Globes, nor the SAGs nommed her. She was totally left out. Small British Indie, but the Academy LOVES Mike Leigh. Sony Pictures Classics has been campaigning her in lead and it’s been the biggest mistake of this year’s Oscars. BAFTA her own country says she’s Supporting. Maybe the Academy will too. And nominate her FINALLY. But so far she’s only won the National Board of Review for Best Actress then NOTHING ELSE. Poor Leslie Manville. ANOTHER victim of category confusion.

And FINALLY~ MIRANDA RICHARDSON in “Made in Dagenham” Much pre-season heat, but not nommed by either the Globes or the SAGS. BAFTA has asterisked her. So maybe she could turn up as a surprise, too.

LOOKS like there’s going to be A LOT of surprises in the Supporting Actress category. Melissa Leo is not even asterisked here. Though she’s listed. Ditto Jackie Weaver. Ditto Mila Kunis.

AND HAILEE STEINFELD IS LISTED AS A BEST ACTRESS CONTENDER!?!? Though she is NOT asterisked….So you see, she’s already splitting her own vote. The Academy might leave her off completely and I wish they would. But “True Grit” is a hit and it’s blowing up so big…

The New York Times, EW & their Oscar advocacy

I can’t put up the Michelle Williams article. Yet. Technical difficulties.

But I DO think that Michelle will get nominated. And David Karger of EW agrees with me. He has her in his USUALLY tremendously accurate Oscar nomination predictions. For Best Actress. David Karger, for those who don’t follow all this OSCAR stuff as closely as I or Harvey Weinstein do, is Entertainment Weekly’s go-to guy for Oscar reporting, and he’s pretty astute. One of the best, if you ask me, and of course, you ARE asking me because YOU’RE READING THIS.

And meanwhile they’ve(EW), they’ve  got Natalie Portman looking seriously glamorous on their Oscar cover, and radiating happiness as if to say ALREADY “I’ve won!” And EW is alternating her image with James Franco. He is co-hosting of course with Anne Hathaway. He’s probably going to be nominated for “127 Hours” though his film and the director Danny Boyle won’t. Not doing well with audiences…

But I digress.

So of course, we EXPECT EW(Entertainment Weekly, or www.ew.com ) to come out with an Oscar cover, but boy does it seem EARLY! But of course it’s not early at all. It’s Right On Time. If you want to influence the Oscar voters, the Academy members who have gotten their ballots to fill in right about NOW! So even though it seems like jumping the gun, it isn’t. It’s time, dear readers, dear cineastes, it’s OSCAR TIME! YAY!

And it’s not surprising that EW is doing this Of course, it isn’t. It’s what they DO.

 But it IS surprising that the NYTimes came out with AN ENTIRE SECTION of their Sunday Newspaper called “THE OSCARS” in big, bold type. And with GIGANTIC half-page pictures of Christian Bale and Natalie Portman(yes, her again) and pieces on their characters and their performances in “The Fighter” and “Black Swan.”

And if that isn’t Oscar Advocacy, I don’t know what is.

I think Natalie Portman’s win is pretty inevitable at this point, and of course her nomination is assured. And deserved. The nomination comes first, remember? And the same is probably true for Christian Bale. But his WIN?

Well, according to the NYTimes, it’s a done deal. But I don’t know about that…That category is still up for grabs.

But the SIZE of that picture and that piece!?! And by Manhola Dargis, no less. Is this the objectivity that New York Times is supposedly the last bastion of in journalism?

A. O. Scott the OTHER film critic at the Times wrote the piece extolling Natalie Portman’s performance. There’s three film critics at the NYTimes, if you’re keeping count.

And where was their third esteemed critic? And someone who I’m confused with constantly because our names are so similar, Stephen Holden? And where was Colin Firth?

Well they were BOTH relegated to the last two back pages of this special issue, with an equally gigantic picture of Firth, with Geoffrey Rush, in a WONDERFUL, beautifully written piece about Firth’s performance in “The King’s Speech” by Holden at his absolute best. I was very moved by it.

But it was on THE LAST TWO PAGES?!? Why was it placed there? I guess, because Colin Firth’s win is so assured that the editors of “The OSCARS” didn’t think he needed their extra help. I guess.

But anyway, it was there, after all. And I was glad to see the Grey Lady putting a little color in her cheeks over, of all things, the Oscar race.

But Christian Bale? The front-runner? As far as the New York Times is concerned. This is for Best Supporting Actor, of course. But HEL-LOH, NYT, as good as his performance is, and it’s one of his best, I’m really not sure he’s an Oscar slum-dunk for The Win in that category.

What IF, and it’s more than an IF, what if the ailing Michael Douglas is nominanted for “Wall St. 2” in that category? OK, he’s got TWO Oscars already and one of them for Best Actor for playing Gordan Geko in the original “Wall St.” and an earlier one for  producing “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” which won Best Picture many, many moons ago.

And there’s also Geoffrey Rush’s towering performance, which to its’ credit the Times did en-picture, ON THE LAST TWO PAGES, and shared with Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech.”

So no, I don’t think Christian Bale has got this in the bag. And yes I would expect the LA Times to do something this splashy on the Oscars. They’re in LA after all. But the Grey Lady herself?

Well, I LOVE reading about “The Oscars” no matter if the Times is going to try to influence my vote. Me? Well, if I was a voting member of AMPAS AND I’M NOT, I’d vote for Geoffrey Rush.

It will be VERY interesting to see just how this all pans out since I do think that Bale, Rush and Douglas are all going to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

And Best Supporting Actress??? The Times didn’t even venture an educated guess on that one. THAT’S how up in the air THAT category is!

“The Fighter” An Oscar Knock-Out!+ Other Awards News

I have to say, having just returned from an Academy-ish screening(it was mixed with guilds and obviously, actual press, too. I mean,was there!) and yes, it’s got Oscar nomination chances galore!

The audience at this screening seemed to love it, as I was tipped that the Academy would and they audibly did. That was born out by all the laughs and gasps and cheers throughout, though there was no final applause at the end. Every one left with smiles on their faces. ALWAYS a good sign for Oscar!

Mark Wahlberg’s passion project of many years has come to ripe fruition with him wisely surrounding himself with the some of the Best Actors in the business, like Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams, all of whom I think are assured Oscar nominations in Supporting for this.

So it’s a holiday feast of blue-collar, but blue-ribbon actors all trying to out-do each other in what is a veritable Oscar smack-down and SUCCEEDING mightily. Each landing punch after thespic (acting) punch in this knock-out of a movie!

Although this is a boxing saga, it’s really more of a family drama, being played out against a boxing background. This Lowell Massachusetts hard-scrabble setting, replete with Boston accents, gives Leo, Adams and especially Bale, career-capping chances to really go to town in an award-winning, Oscar-baity way. Are they chewing the scenery for Thanksgiving? Gobble Gobble. Well, Leo and Bale are anyway…but the Academy LOVES these showy turns.

Wahlberg OTOH plays it down, very understated, almost dour and lets the wildness of the colorful characters around him shine. And shine, they do!

Bale is unfogettable as his crack-headed brother who is also his f**ked up trainer. Leo is  their horrible Mother-From-Hell  who is also his money-grubbing manager, and Adams gets to play against them as the good girl who he hooks up with, and who has to stand up to his insane family AND SHE DOES! You are totally rooting for her to take down the dastardly, deadly duo of Mom Leo and Brother Bale. This movie is one juicy fight scene from beginning to end! Whether it’s in the ring, or in the living room, or on the front porch, EVERY one is fighting!

As Wahlberg is also the producer here (and Bob and Harvey Weinstein are also listed as producers, too(!) with Paramount the main distributor) he’s going to get nominated for  getting this made & helming this irresistible (to the Academy and I think to audiences, too) combo of heart, guts and BOXING.

Boxing films have traditionally been catnip to the Academy and this one, though the formulaic trailers have been misleading-by-a-mile, “The Fighter” will be no exception. So in a field of ten possible nominees for Best Picture, I say the “The Fighter” is going to score one of those ten best slots.

With Wahlberg so monotone himself, I don’t think he’s got a chance at an Acting nomination. But as a producer of “The Fighter”, yes!

It’s going to be a Golden Glove( and Golden Globe) bout between Geoffrey Rush for “The King’s Speech,” and Bale for this in Supporting Actor  and THAT match-up is going to cause all the major Oscar attention for this film.  And those two performances are so different and also so  juicy, well, it’s a delicious prospect!

And Melissa Leo and Amy Adams are BOTH so good that they are BOTH going to be nominated most likely. Canceling each other out, and leaving the win to Helena Bonham-Carter for “The King’s Speech.” 

When two actresses from the same film get nominated in Supporting it’s historically someone else, who wins. The last time I remember this happening was in 2001 for “Gosford Park” when it was both Dame Helen Mirren and Dame Maggie Smith going head-to-head in Supporting…and somebody else won. Jennifer Connelly in a year that there was “A Beautiful Mind” sweep.

Bale v. Geoffrey Rush, who is brilliant, but already HAS an Oscar would be literally duking it out til the last minute in Supporting. Rush, as the hilarious, genial ,but tough speech therapist Lionel Logue, who is the Australian Henry Higgins teaching Colin Firth(the King) how to speak, is going to be a Battle Royal(pardon the pun) with Bale’s junkie, who, though everyone forgets it, as also a Brit. Yes, he is. He really is. Remember him as the kid in Spielberg’s “Empire of the Sun”? Yes, that was little Christian. A child actor who has endured and ended up as “The Dark Knight.” Yes, that was him, the last time in the hood and cape. But all people remember from that film is the astounding Joker of the late Heath Ledger. R.I.P. Heath.

Bale, however, ALMOST overdoes it in the OTT category,but how can you play a character who is always tweaking, and not seem OTT, as well as ADD? Bale has lost a ton of weight for the part and as a  junkie who jumps out of windows to escape his harridan, chain-smoking mother (Leo), I do think he’s in contention.

It’s just that how much do they like Christian Bale? I mean, really? With that Internet rant to that poor stage hand being something that still lurks in people’s mind when they think of him? They may just make him wait, and give Rush a second Oscar for what is clearly the performance of the year.

But Bale’s never been nominated before and Rush has won before.  Me, I’d vote for Rush…but…it’s gonna be a fight to the photo finish at the Kodak between the two of them.

It’s also just a question of HOW many Oscars are they going to give to “The King’s Speech”? Colin Frith and Helena Bonham-Carter are both way out in front in Best Actor and now, Best Supporting Actress, too. Is “The King’s Speech” going to sweep?

I heard people discussing how there was one movie where there were lines around the block about ten days ago.  It was for a SAG screening and that was for “The King’s Speech.” “The Fighter” was well attended, but not full, by any means. And no applause at the end, though a consistently involved chorus of laughs and gasps, means they were involved. But  not as enthralled as “The King’s Speech” audiences are.

Bale has the best Oscar shot of the bunch of them. He gets to OD, and then go cold turkey in a jail cell! Now that’s what I call a PART! So Christian Bale will finally get his first Oscar nomination…

But will he win?

And in terms of other films…I heard when the New York Film Critics get together to vote soon, very soon. (“True Grit” FINALLY starts screening next week for all and sundry) that at the moment it’s still going to be a pitched battle between “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network.” So, what else is new? That’s the way it’s been since Toronto!

Except that today, “The King’s Speech” just got 100% from the Top Critics on Rotten Tomatoes! How can ANYone argue with those stats? Especially the Academy!

Harvey Weinstein must be having a very happy Thanksgiving indeed!

Coupled with women, who are just flat out refusing to see “127 Hours” because of the gore, and the arm-thing…

People, again it was women I was talking to, are not digging “Black Swan.” ‘It ruins ‘Swan Lake'” one balletomane told me. But ballet lovers are going to be in the minority of AMPAS.

But then, of course, WOMEN are not the majority of the AMPAS voters. The SWORM are. Single White Old Rich Men…

And EVERYbody is digging Michael Douglas’ performance in “Solitary Man.”

Day Three – Eaten. Day Four-Riot at the Scotia Bank!

Oh no! My third day at TIFF has disappeared completely! And I was so happy — yesterday…

Saw the Best Film Of the Year “The King’s Speech” and interviewed both Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush! As well as their British/Australian director Tom Hooper. Who nicknamed me their “Oscar Messenger”! I think I’ll add it as a subtitle! A.K.A THE OSCAR MESSENGER!

And — all of it has disappeared!

And now I’m feeling absolutely sick, because I was caught in a near mob scene, yes, TIFF does it again! It this was Day Four RUINED! Because like an idiot I was made to stand for over an hour waiting to get into see Danny Boyle’s new movie “127 Hours” which is how long it felt standing in that line! With  over 1000 people and the airconditioning not really working. And Cameron Bailey, TIFF’s CEO, rising to his full height, which must be over six feet and operating in crowd control mode, if not riot…People were sooo weakened by this….

I’m just a shadow of my former self. My knees are KILLING me. And I’m afraid to go back into that building, the Scotia Bank, again….Makes the case for going to Telluride, doesn’t it?

But I did see two movies this morning. Marion Cotillard’s “Little White Lies” and also Fridrik Thor Fridriksson’s best film in AGES “Mama Gogo” Icelandic, of course. And I just loved it. About a filmmaker(obviously him) played by  my old friend Hylmer Snaer Gudnudsson, trying to get a film made while his senior citizen mother, Mama Gogo, is losing it to Alzheimer’s. I loved it.

Tomorrow is going to be a killer day. What with the Bell Lightbox opening, then the Woody Allen press conference which is now an AUDIO press conference. No video allowed. And then Marion herself and my big reunion with her both of these in the Four Seasons, then I’m supposedly back at the Scene-Of-the-Riot the Scotia Bank…to interview Fridrik…something tells me, we won’t be getting back downtown for that one…

I am so upset that the Blog about “The King’s Speech” disappeared! I was so excited, and it truly was a wonderful, wonderful film experience! One of the best I’ll ever have! IN MY LIFE! A high so high that it justifies all you have to go through for TIFF’s sake. It was magnificent. The audience was transfixed. An audience of CRITICS no less. Who applauded. Laughed. And the at the end didn’t want to leave. They stayed and READ THE CREDITS?!?! Oscar nominations for everyone! And the buzz now is that Colin Firth has won the Oscar…

Depends entirely on how sick Michael Douglas is – or isn’t…

I met Peggy Siegel in the sweltering hallway outside the “King’s Speech” junket in a remote part of the building that no one knew was there! Talk about clandestine!?!? Is Colin Firth THAT famous? Well, he sure is the talk of the Festival!

I typed this all yesterday and now I am just repeating myself. But it was a sublime movie and a sublime moment for me and him and Geoffrey Rush and their director, Tom Hooper, who all seemed astonished that I was their “Oscar messenger.” I think Tom Hooper said that.

I told Colin that it was the Best Film of the Year and that it’s one of the greatest screen performances EVAH! And it is…

I’m not overstating this. Everyone here is just breath-took by it. And I think it only had ONE measly P&I screening and won’t be seen in the States until November.

I also told Colin that he was going to win every single critics award and was for sure going to get nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and that he COULD win.

This was after saying two days ago when I saw Wall Street 2 that it was Michael Douglas’…!!! OOOPS! I knew Colin was the other contender and I knew he would be very, very good. Excellent, too. But I didn’t judge that it would be a HISTORIC performance! But it is! It’s one of the great screen performances.

I told Colin this and he was really non-plussed. At a loss for words. And then he wondered whether or not he really would win…I think after losing last year to Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart” he’s not at all sure about things like this…

I said his role had everything. He’s playing a Royal. Brit, Brit, Brit AND he’s disabled. He’s got a handicap. His stutter, which is a VERY hard thing to play and play convincingly and SUSTAIN it for the entire film.

Geoffrey Rush is equally sublime as the Australian speech teacher who helps him overcome it and he’s equally magnificent.

He’ll be nominated for Best Supporting Actor and even though he already has an Oscar he could win there, too.

The film that this reminded me the most of was “Shakespeare in Love” which Rush also scored a Supporting nom for but he didn’t win, though the film did. And Gwyneth. AND Colin Firth was actually  in that movie, too, as Gwyneth’s disliked fiancee…

So now I have to change my Facebook headline. Two days ago it was Michael Douglas’ to lose. But now I think he’s just lost it. To Colin Firth. Well, it will be a big critical hit, f’r sure.

And Colin said to me ON CAMERA “Can I carry you with me everywhere?”(Well, maybe he said “take me with you”…) And I said,

“Yes! I’m ostentatiously available!”

And THEN I get stuck in another TIFF near riot….They should’ve expected this. They had nothing strong programmed AGAINST “129 hours” this afternoon.

MISTAKE!

Opening “The King’s Speech” at the same time as the “Black Swan” as far as P&I is concerned was actually a brilliant stroke of programming. Nobody rioted and everybody got in – to one or the other. NOT THE CASE with “129 Hours.”

This just in — there was a fire alarm! They didn’t tell us! On the anniversary of 9/11!?!?! I could’ve DIED there!

I saw Tom O’Neill and also Rex Reed, at a distance. Neither looked happy. OMG! A BOMB SCARE! Or whatever it was.
