Devastated to hear that “Carousel” is closing!

Devastated to hear that my beloved “Carousel” is closing in Sept.! The curt press release didn’t give reasons, but the primary reason for something like this happening, and so suddenly, is money.. The box-office is always the culprit. Ticket sales will now, of course, go through the roof.

Lindsey Mendez, who all you dear readers know, was not in it the performance I saw. She won a Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and was not widely known heretofore. She can be seen on You Tube in a series of backstage-at-Carousel videos she made.

Justin Peck also won Best Choreography for his incredible, soaring, balletic  dance numbers.

This is all so sad. And the press release made it sound quite final, like there was no wiggle room on this blunt decision.If you haven’t seen it, you must rush to see it as soon as possible. Opera Legend Renee Fleming, Tony winner for “Beautiful” Jessie Mueller, and the incredible Joshua Henry  also star.  Jessie Mueller also won Best Actress in a Musical from the Drama Desk. And it has the largest orchestra of a Broadway show in recent memory. And a harp! The superb orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick and Musical Supervision by Andy Einhorn.

It’s at the Imperial Theater 249 West 45th Street, the same theater where my favorite show of last year “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet” was.*sigh*

Come Ride Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Wonderful, Rousing Revival of “Carousel” on Bway!

 

“Come ride away with me! And I will take you to heights you never dreamed of! ” beckons the plaintive/beautiful “Carousel Waltz” that opens Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic “Carousel” now being magnificently revived on Broadway, directed masterfully by Jack O’Brien. It stars, as the star-crossed lovers Julie Jordan and Billy Bigelow, Jessie Mueller (“Beautiful”) and Joshua Henry(“The Scottsboro Boys”).

And “Carousel” is sounding more blissfully like an opera than ever. with the largest, most opulently orchestrated orchestra (with a harp even!) I’ve ever heard on Broadway! Orchestrations by the great Jonathan Tunick and Musical Supervision by Andy Einhorn.

The legendary lyric soprano Renee Fleming is on hand, too. To make the point even more clearly that Rodgers and Hammerstein meant to break your broken heart even further with a celestial, moving “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

You can’t miss this one! All you musical  theatre romantics out there!. It will make you cry from the first chords of the wordless, long, lush overture that opens with the “Carousel Waltz ” as Santo Loquasto’s glittering cup-cake-like tiara of a shimmering crown descends to represent the top of this dizzying merry-go round, as Tony-winning choreographer, Justin Peck keeps his dancers flying, spinning through the air. You MUST ride their joyous Carousel with all these wonderful artists on it! It’s a joy ride of a revival that surprises and startles and blows you away over and over again. especially musically. Particularly if you think this is an over-familiar chestnut of a  score that has no surprises left to find. You’ll never be able to forget the sounds this magical musical makes..


As perfectly classical as this “Carousel” is in every respect, it is breaking ground thoroughly too with its casting of African-American Joshua Henry, who proves beyond a doubt that he is one of the best great baritones Broadway now has, but that also director Jack O’Brien’s color-blind casting gives this masterpiece even more depth and timeliness that it’s ever had.

Joshua Henry’s reluctant wooing of white Jessie Mueller seems a perfect match, and gives credence to the other small town New Englanders giving vent to their small-town New England prejudicial warnings to Julie Jordan(Mueller). Their constant put-downs of Billy Bigelow(Henry) now seems justified from the 19th century point of view. It reminds us that their admonishments of an inter-racial romance’s “ending will be sad” prove true  as the (spoiler alert) Second Act turns tragic.

Billy never thinks he’s good enough for Julie and events bare him out.

Joshua Henry brings down the house with a rage-full “Soliloquy,” turning it more powerfully dark than I’ve ever remembered it. When he sings he doesn’t want his unborn daughter “to be dragged up in slums with a lot of bums like me,” it is coming from a place of pain that Rodgers and Hammerstein never envisioned.

And Jessie Mueller is a revelation too, singing in a sweet coloratura soprano that we’ve never heard her use before. She’s always been a Broadway belting baby utilizing her killer voice in the lower veiled registers. She now shows that her vocal and emotional range is limitless. She also doesn’t shy away from the passion Julie is feeling that propels her to Billy. “What’s the Use of Wond’ring” which is often just a throw away, here becomes a life lesson. 

It is foreshadowing as she is joined in its sad, resigned tones as Mueller proves to be a true relation of Renee Fleming, who joins her in the song and agrees with her. And then on Billy’s horrifying death, a bloody one this time, when Fleming tells Mueller over Billy’s dying body “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” she shakes the heavens as well as the rafters with the celestial perfection of her legendarily, thrilling voice.

My only disappointment, and it was a big one, was that Tony Winner Lindsey Mendes was out the night I saw it. She was replaced by a very bland, super-white, uptight college girl, which is not what Carrie Pipperidge’s character is supposed to be at all. I disliked her so much I won’t even mention her name.

And SHE won the Tony? In THAT part? Ms. Mendes must’ve been terrific, because the massive achievements of Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller and Renee Fleming were world-class, unforgettable.

The excited audience applauded everything. The opening carousel appearance, and stopped almost every single number with rounds of applause also, WITHIN the song. I’ve never seen anything like it.

And last but not lost, Method Actress Margaret Colin proves that tasty, tacky, businesswoman/owner of the carousel, Mrs. Mullins demands and commands every single second of her stage time. She makes one wish she had more to do and even makes you think that SHE should have had a rousing song, too. I’ve never seen a “Carousel” with such a strong Mrs.Mullins. In Ann Roth’s flouncy, bouncy costumes, Colin’s virago becomes a diva.

I could see this “Carousel” over and over and over again, and I can’t wait til the next time I do!

2015 Drama Desk Awards NOMINATIONS Announced today at 54 Below by Judith Light & Jessie Mueller

In shock and awe, as the Drama Desk announced their award NOMINATIONS for the Best of the Best of the Theater season 2014-15. I have so much respect for what these dedicated people do. The Nominating Committee sees something like over 270 plays a year!!! It staggers me the level of commitment to theater that these people maintain.

And headed for the eighth year(I think) by the valiant, unstoppable Barbara Siegel (yes, she’s married to the famous Scott) once again this year, the nominations excite and confound me. I’m glad for instance that Ben Miles and Lydia Leonard were both nominated for Best Actor In a Play and Best Supporting Actress In a Play for “Wolf Hall” for playing respectively Thomas Cromwell and Anne Boleyn.

But where oh where was “The Heidi Chronicles”?!? And any recognition for Elizabeth Moss’ and Bryce Pinkham’s terrific performances? I liked this revival better than I liked the original production, which I thought was horribly anti-gay.(But it made David Hyde-Pierce’s career in the same role as Pinkham.) But Pinkham and Moss did both get nominated for the Outer Critic’s Circle. I hope they repeat at the Tonys.

They probably will as will Ben Miles and Lydia Leonard. You see, the Drama Desk has the daunting task of nominating EVERYTHING that can be seen in any given year on any stage in New York City. Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway. Which is why I have so much respect for them.

In other words, quality theater can be rewarded no matter how small or how big the stage it occurs on is or how many people see it. Of course, Superstars like Dame Helen Mirren in “The Audience” and Bradley Cooper in the now closed “Elephant Man” were nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor in a play. Mirren will totally win this award, as she will win many, many others this season, and for Best Actor I think it’s between Cooper and Miles. But more on that later.

Jessie Mueller a Former Drama Desk Winners(and Tony winners, too) looked lovely and elegant in complementary shades of blue.(see picture below). And Mueller, looking every each the poised and coiffed star that she has become, enthused, “It’s so exciting sitting in the audience instead of being on stage and seeing all these wonderful plays and musicals. Each one so different from the others. It’s thrilling. I love it!”

They just THREE numbers from “Beautiful” with Carole King herself introducing then dueting with Jessie Mueller, who will now win Best Actress in a Musical for sure.

The audience gave it a standing O.

Neil Patrick Harris, of course, won “Best Actor in a Musical” as I predicted. And he gave a very nice speech then kissed his fiancee (still not married after 8 years) David Burtka ON THE MOUTH! Just when you think the Tonys can’t get any gayer. They get gay-er.

That standing ovation for Carole King and Jessie Mueller now has me worried…Does this mean that ALLLL those people, potentially Tony Voters, voted for “Beautiful” as Best Musical?!?

“Hedwig” just won Best Revival of a Musical. I think it’s won four now, Best Revival, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical.

“A Gentleman’s Guide…” just won Best Costumes. Which makes it three wins so far? Best Director, Best Book and Best Costumes….

“Hedwig” now also just won Best Lighting Design of a Musical, so that’s five!

Hugh is now singing and dancing with each of the five Best Actresses in a Musical. In. The.Audience…It works.

Jessie Mueller WINS! Thanks her parents AND Carole King!Very, very nice emotional speech. Yup. She’s a star.

Gentleman’s Guide Sweeps Drama Desk Awards with 7!!!

It was quite a big night for wit and brilliance on Broadway as the super-smart “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” swept the Drama Desk Awards tonight with seven wins at a gala awards presentation at Town Hall. The glamourous packed audience roared its’ approval.

It won Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical Jefferson Mays, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Lauren Worsham, Best Director of a Musical Darko Tresnjak, Best Book of a Musical Robert L. Freedman, Best Lyrics Steven Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman, Best Projection Design in a Musical Aaron Rhyne.

I only wish it could’ve been a three way tie, and the stupendous Bryce Pinkham, who was also nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, could’ve won, too. And Lisa O’Hare should’ve been nominated, too, for her super-slinky Sibella.And may I say, Steven Lutvak should’ve won for his glittering score. And so should the set and costumes, too! I’m such a fan! I hope it sweeps the Tonys, also! I think it will.

The unusual,odd occurance of a double tie, something that has never happened before in my memory as a Voting Member of the Drama Desk, happened tonight as Best Actor in a Musical, the most hotly contended of all the categories, except perhaps Best Musical, got BOTH Neil Patrick Harris of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” AND Jefferson Mays, as I said, Best Actor in a Musical Awards.

And in Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Lauren Gorsham, as the colortura soprana ingenue Phoebe in “A Gentleman’s Guide…” tied with Anika Larsen, of “Beautiful” who plays Carole King’s wise-cracking best friend and rival composer. Interestingly both actresses were profiled together in a New York Times article that combined the two lovely young performers and strangely predicted the tie in their category.

Audra McDonald won Best Actress in a Play for “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grille” for her searing, elegiac performance of the late Billie Holliday in the last days of her life. Many thought she was in the wrong category since she sings over a dozen of Holiday’s greatest hits in the show that is presented as if it were in a supper club as the audience is grouped in small cocktail tables on what is usually the floor of the orchestra of the Circle in the Square theater.

But it mattered not what category she was in to the Drama Deskers, who voted her Best Actress in a Play anyway! Didn’t think they would, but they did! Damn the semantics! Full speed ahead to the Tonys! Where she might become the very first performer to ever win SIX!?! If she wins there, too. If she won this big award, from the persnickety Drama Desk voters, (she already won the Outer Critics Circle), she’ll win the Tony, too, I think. DONE!

How many Drama Desk Awards has she won? More than Tonys even, I bet!

Best Actress in a Musical was Jessie Mueller as Carole King in “Beautiful,” a juke box musical consisting of Carole King’s many many hit songs.

Best Actor in a play went to Bryan Cranston in “All the Way” which also won Best Play.

All these performers in the major categories, Audra McDonald, Brian Cranston and Jessie Mueller could very well repeat at the Tonys NEXT Sunday night June 8. But who will win Best Actor in a Musical? Will both Jefferson Mays and Neil Patrick Harris tie again? This is something that has never happened at the Tonys. Stay tuned!!!

Special Awards Each year, the Drama Desk votes special awards to recognize excellence and significant contributions to the theater. For 2013-2014, these awards are:

To Soho Rep.: For nearly four decades of artistic distinction, innovative production, and provocative play selection.

To Veanne Cox: For her ability to express the eccentricities, strengths, and vulnerabilities of a range of characters, and notably for her comedic flair as evidenced in this season’s The Old Friends and The Most Deserving.

To Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, the Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award: For his visionary directorial excellence. This season’s The Golden Dragon and The Mysteries exemplify his bold and strikingly original imagination.

To the ensembles of Off-Broadway’s The Open House and Broadway’s The Realistic Joneses and to the creator of both plays, Will Eno: For two extraordinary casts and one impressively inventive playwright.

Drama Desk Award Predictions

Drama Desk Award Predicitons

Yes, the Drama Desk Awards are coming up fast! They are handed out on June 1 next Sunday at Town Hall.

And here are my intrepid predictions! I think critic’s fave “A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Valor” (pictured above ^) Will sweep and get the Best Musical Award and all the others in that musical category. Best Music, Best Lyrics, Best Book, Best Orchestrations(the great Jonathan Tunick, natch.)

And in the hardest fought battle Best Actor in a Musical, I think the Drama Desk-ers being all critics are going to also choose actor’s actor Jefferson Mays for his eight(or nine) roles in “A Gentlemen’s Guide…” over the much more famous Neil Patrick Harris in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Though when the Tonys come up the following week, we could see this reversed.

“Hedwig” will get Best Revival of a Musical. And I think “All the Way” though I LOATHED it myself will get Best Play. THREE HOURS OF HAM! I mean, I like ham. But THREE HOURS!?!?

However, I think the Drama Desk-ers will vote for it. Though something less known might surprise here. It could be anything, if it’s not the obvious Tony front-runner.

Best Actor in a Play will PROBABLY be Bryan Cranston in “All the Way” as LBJ. Another Tony front-runner. Chris O’Dowd in “Of Mice and Men” could be the surprise upset here. And this would REALLY be a surprise.

Best Actress in a Play may very well go to Tyne Daly for “Mothers and Sons”. Though with Audra McDonald in this category, too, it could be Audra. Though the Drama Desk-ers, being all critics through and through. and sticklers for detail, may balk at the Five-Time Tony Winner being put in this category though she sings an endless amount of memorable period songs. Audra won the Outer Critics Circle but she was in Best Actress in A Musical there, not Best Actress in a Play.

Best Actress in a Musical will also be Tony front-runner Jessie Mueller for “Beautiful:The Carole King Musical” where she’s amazingly effective as the ugly ducking who becomes a swan/superstar.

Best Revival of a Play will be “Twelfth Night.” It’s no longer running, but that won’t bother the Drama Desk-ers, who don’t take that into consideration, the way the Tony voters do.

Best Revue will be “After Midnight.”

The Drama Desk Awards are the only awards in all of theater, let it be said, that honor Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway equally, on an even playing field.

And the prestige of these awards has increased since the press are no long allowed to vote for the Tony Awards!
