a.k.a. "The Oscar Messenger"

natalie-portmanWell, well, well…the Ace Eddie Announced their nominations this morning. These are from the much desired Film Editors of the year’s top pictures. And while they nominated the front-runners, “La La Land” and “Manchester by the Sea”, they notably left OUT “Jackie”, “Fences,” “Lion” and “Silence” Martin Scorsese’s entry, edited by the legendary Thelma Schoonmaker.

Is this an indication of weakness in the ones left out? I think so.

And the ones who were left IN are:

Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic)
“Arrival” – Joe Walker, ACE
“Hacksaw Ridge” – John Gilbert, ACE
“Hell or High Water” – Jake Roberts
“Manchester by the Sea” – Jennifer Lame
“Moonlight” – Nat Sanders, Joi McMillon

Best Editing Feature Film (Comedy or Musical)
Deadpool” – Julian Clarke, ACE
“Hail, Caesar!” – Roderick Jaynes
“The Jungle Book” – Mark Livolsi, ACE
“La La Land” – Tom Cross, ACE
“The Lobster” – Yorgos Mavropsaridis

This signals signs of growing strength of “Arrival”, “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Hell or Highwater” particularly. And also reflects support that may be repeated when the Actors Branch of the Academy announces. Meaning Andrew Garfield, IF he is nominated at all, will be IN for “Hacksaw Ridge” and maybe BOTH Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster may get in for “Hell or Highwater.”

Frankly surprised by the low budget gay indie “Moonlight” turning up here in the valley of the industry’s much-discussed “steak eaters.”
