a.k.a. "The Oscar Messenger"

Oscar & tilesBig Awards Weekend coming up FAST! It’s the PGA(Producer’s Guild) followed by the SAG Awards on Sunday night. Why are the PGA awards or AWARD, really, soooo important? But in this, which is supposed to be a wide open year( or not), if “Boyhood” wins the coveted PGA award for Best Picture, then that race will be considered pretty much over. And “Boyhood” the perceived front-runner will be the little-film-that-could and DID win the Oscar.

All these “precursor” awards are really only important (to us in the real world) because they tell us what is going to happen at the Oscars, the only awards race, we, the world, presumably care about. And why is the PGA award so particularly important? It has in the past few years, since “The King’s Speech” won, told us EXACTLY what film was going to win Best Picture. And it probably will again this year.

I don’t think the late-surging interest in “American Sniper” will impact the PGA award at all because the ballots had to be in before this past weekend’s box-office blow-out by “AS” (over $100 million and counting) happened.

So that means that whatever the film was that was ahead before “American Sniper”s late-blooming surprise is going to still be ahead for the PGA.

The SAG awards are a completely different kettle o’ fish. “Sniper” is nominated NO WHERE for them, and I’ll talk more about them later.
