BAFTA awards Many surprises, shocks

Well, the BAFTA 2014 awards have come and gone and there were many surprising shocks. Main among them was Jennifer Lawrence’s win for Best Supporting Actress over favored-to-win Lupita Nyong’o for “12 Years a Slave.” Am I mad or what? Mad as in angry.

However, “12 Years a Slave” won Best Picture and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor and I only hope that repeats at the Oscars, which are two weeks away.

But “12 YAS” losing in BOTH Supporting acting categories was a shock. Michael Fassbender lost to first-time-ever-actor Barkhad Abdi for his frightening Somali pirate captain in “Captain Phillips.”
They clearly wanted to give “Capt. P.” SOMEthing.

Alfonso Cauron as many predicted won Best Director for “Gravity” which also won Best British Film and the most awards of the night. It’s night over there in Blighty.

Cate Blanchett was the only PRESUMED acting frontrunner to win for “Blue Jasmine” and this assures her winning the Oscar. I hope it does the same for Chiwetel.

Cate the Great dedicated her win to the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who was her pal and co-star since they appeared in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” many years ago. She said, “This is for you, Phil. You bastard.” (!!!)
