I have to agree with friendo Jeff Wells, who’s at Sundance blogging his brains out about all the new Indies screening there. Some hot some not. You can read all about it at http://www.hollywood-elsewhere.com Where JW picks up on a quote that was said to Pete Hammond by “12 Years a Slave” star Chiwetel Ejiofor ” A Tie? A tie something you wear around your neck, ” he told Hammond.
Hammond who was actually AT the Producer’s Guild last night when Ben Affleck(last year’s winner for “Argo”) said that there was a very intense moment when Affleck said “There’s a TIE.”(My capitalization). I guess it was the sound of all the “American Hustle” people hitting the ground with shocking thuds.
You should definitely read Hammond’s great account of this GREAT moment in Oscar history. It’s at http://www.deadline.com
He describes the “Hustle” peeps straight off their SAG victory for Best Ensemble on the long ago Saturday of this jam-packed awards weekend He says they all turned “ashen” and reminded him of how people looked three years ago when “The Social Network” or as I liked to call it “The Joy of Typing” lost in a shockeroo(Tom O’Neil’s favorite word) to “The King’s Speech,” which I knew was going to win all the time.
Academy members don’t even HAVE computers. Like for instance Robert Redford, but there are MANY others. One hopes that they’ve caught up in the three years hence.
But I know one thing. “12 Years a Slave” is a GREAT, American movie. And “American Hustle” is just a barely there comedy. What’s barely there is the laughs IMHO. “American Hustle” is now in the unenviable position of going from Hero to Zero in less than 24 hours. It was nominated for 10 Oscars on Thursday, and now it could LOSE all ten. Though I do think it’ll get best Hair.Yes, they give out an Oscar for that.
As far as “Gravity” is concerned, it’s a great technical achievement(i sound like a broken record saying this) but in the end it’s the Actors and the PRODUCERS branches that are the biggest. And “Gravity” as Tom O’Neil points out in his latest musings on http://www.goldderby.com “Gravity” could win the most Oscars and still lose Best Picture.
I just have to smile at how against “12 Years a Slave” Tom has been all season and now he’s picking it to win Best Picture!!!!!!
Imagine that! AND the only ACTOR or ACTRESS he talks about in his entire Google Hangouts that he does, the ONLY person who he MENTIONS is Lupita Nyong’O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, he was totally backing Jennifer Lawrence, but if TOM O’NEIL is now saying “Lupita has the momentum” then y’know something? She REALLY does. He also thinks “12 Years a Slave” “has the momentum” now. He talks to Academy Members out in Hwood where he’s located and he notes that everyone he talks to talks with “great reverence” and “in hushed tones” about “12 Years a Slave.” And now he thinks it’s going to win.
Everyone seems to think Alphonso Cuaron is going to win the DGA, the prestigious directors’ guild award this coming weekend, but he even is given pause. He has a very good analysis of the situation And his “slugfests” with his other editors are all very entertaining and interesting to watch IF YOU’RE AS OBSESSED WITH AWARDS like I am, and HE is.
I remember once saying to him at a function in New York that I was an “Oscarologist” and Tom said, “Oscarologist! I love that word!”
At this time of year, particularly we’re all Oscarologists, right?
